Ferdinand Magellan

Ferdinand Magellan was born in 1480, Sabrosa, Portugal and he died 1521 in Cebu, Philippines at the age of 41.

Magellan discovered a place called "Strait of Magellan". It is at the very bottom of South America. He was a Portuguese navigator and explorer. He first sailed for Portugal but then he sailed for Spain. He sailing for the king of Portugal but the king refused to fund Magellan to discover the spice islands so he asked the king of Spain which agreed. The king gave Magellan five ships so he could find a new westward route to the Spice Islands in.

He is famous for being the first man to lead an expedition around the world. He did not finish his voyage because he was killed by native Philippines by a poison arrow in his leg and a spear through his heart. He had two siblings, one sister named Isabel and a brother named Diago de Sousa.

In 1505 Magellan sailed with Francisco de Almedia. it took him three years to complete his voyage around the world to the spice islands. Another interesting fact was at the age of twelve he was appointed as the queen’s messenger. Did you know Magellan was actually the son of the mayor of Portugal? Most of Ferdinand’s crew were Spanish. Ferdinand’s name is Fernado de Magalhaes in Portuguese and Fernado de Magellans in Spanish. But the English translated his name so we could read it in English.
